24 × 48in “Be Cool, Sodapop” was stylistically inspired by the large close-up portraits by New York artist, Richard Phillips (specifically, the hyper-realistic painting, “Scout” featured in the Bass suite of the hit-show Gossip Girl). With my deep interest in drawing portraits, I’ve been told many times by close friends and artist peers to try painting large-scale works (and now, we finally have it). A work which I’ve since started in Aug of 2014, I have not touched the canvas until 5 years later. (It hung on my bedroom wall for long while, and my best friends can vouch for that.) When I was a young boy, I’ve always been puzzled as to why artists take years to finish their work – clearly, I see that now; sometimes when you get inspiration, other times you lose that spark.

Iggy Azalea, the woman portrayed in this painting, was the one that inspired me to work on this passion project. A famous (or infamous) rapper and artist, she’s inspired countless of fans with the motivational messages in her iconic debut single, “Work” which deals with the personal struggles she endured to make it and become a successful star.

The title behind the work was actually coined from a quote by TV super-sleuth Veronica Mars, “Be Cool, Sodapop,” a clear reference to the 1967 coming-of-age novel by S.E. Hinton, “The Outsiders” (and adapted to the screen by director Francis Ford Coppola in 1983). In the midst of our struggles in life, sometimes we just gotta learn to be cool about it. #neilbrian #MidnightInspirations

I wanted to try my hand on this rough illustration style, and as much as I like the convenience (and being able to erase mistakes), I still prefer and love the traditional medium. ❤✏ #analoglove #digitalillustration
