This large-scale acrylic portrait of my friend Jade, also known as Gypsy, was inspired by her family’s travels to Bali and created as a birthday and going-away gift. After meeting her unexpectedly at a Singaporean pub, we quickly bonded. Knowing she was battling an autoimmune disease and embarking on a journey to Australia for treatment, I aimed to imbue the painting with hope and optimism.
Jade is depicted with a vibrant headdress in iridescent hues, adorned with wildflowers and a sunflower, symbolising cheerfulness and the brightness of life. Her ornate black dress is accented with abstract white strokes, and her dreamcatcher-like earrings shimmer with rainbow colors. While her facial features are rendered with hyperrealistic detail, the background bursts with abstract floral elements and dynamic splashes of paint, reflecting the vibrancy of her spirit.
This painting, one of my largest realistic acrylic works to date, took approximately 2-3 weeks to complete. I am deeply honoured that Jade cherished this piece before her departure to Australia.
